Wittnauer Silver
Potential worth of 1976 Wittnauer silver coin / medallion with two diamonds?
Hello! I am VERY new to coin collection and I was given the following coin/medallion:
Large, appears to be silver and heavy: with a woman looking like the Statue of Liberty (but holding a staff) with a star on one side and some sort of atomic symbol on the other side of her, both set with small diamonds. The inscription reads: “Two Centuries of Liberty, Peace, Progress. 1776-1976″ On the back are two men standing on either side of the Liberty Bell with July 4 underneath them.
It’s a beautiful medallion, and it’s in pristine shape, still in the original box (though the box is a bit beat up.
Any coin/medallion collectors out there who can give me insight on its worth? I’ve found nothing online other than that the diamonds are real and it’s genuine silver.
Thanks!
I should say, the box reads Wittnauer Precious Medals Guild, Makers of Fine Medallic Art.
Wittnauer produced or had made different medals at times throughout the 1960-1970′s. The main problem with items like this is there are no reference books out there and no one knows just how many were made. Another problem they are a medal and not a coin. For the bicentennial everyone seemed to make a numismatic item for the occasion. Your item has little collector value with coin collectors for it is not a coin and most medal collectors do not want it either due to the diamonds. If it is one ounce of .999 silver then it is worth the silver value around $17 an ounce minus a % for dealer profit and a jeweler can tell you about the diamonds. Sorry this is the best I can do.
