Vintage Transit

How were old nyc subway seats maintained? It seems they would fall apart with the wear and tear?
Were the people just not as miserable and more respectful as they are now, or was there a sweatshop transit shop where the seats were fixed. I saw some vintage subway cars at the transit museum and they were in beautiful condition. Any nyc subway buffs around help me!
That’s not an answer! WHat I”m saying IS THIS, AND LISTEN WELL.. sigh, people on yahoo just answer without thinking. Having wicker seating on a subway train is IMPRACTICAL in a place where thousands of people ride the trains every day. This is not the orient express, it’s the NYC subway syste,. How did they maintain THEM THEN, sweatshop labor? DId they fall apart? How about a little more insight instead of an I’m stupid ,you’re smart smarty pants answers!
I do not know the answer for NYC, as I have been there only once and no more than a few days.
But I do know the answer for several other countries/railway systems. And as trains are alike, keeping them in repair is likely also alike.
The trains will be taken out of service at regular times, after a set amount of miles and also when a visual inspection shows the need even when the time or miles are not there yet.
One part of the overhaul is the technical side, wheels, axles, engines and so on, an the other part of the overhaul is the inside where the passengers go.
Seats will be taken out and replaced when damaged, cleaned and repaired if possible.
In the time of upholstered soft seats the train repair crews had/have upholsterers who could/can redo the whole of the seat or do a repair as needed.
In the time of the wooden seats the overhaul would include a new layer of varnish if/when needed.
Now in the time of the hard plastic seats, the crews are more likely to replace with new than trying to repair.
Painting the inside of the train and replacing the floor/wall coverings is also done if needed.
The last part of the overhaul will be cleaning and repainting the outside, and taking care of the windows.
As trains have to be taken out of service to remove graffiti you will see many trains running with some, often even with their whole sides covered. Around here a train is only taken out of service for it if an overhaul is due shortly or when the windows are covered for more than a certain percentage. And when the graffiti is insulting or obscene, but in that case it can be that they just cover it with a plain layer of paint, if removing does not work.
The different crews can work at the same time, if needed a train can be divided in parts so all is accessible at the same time, but often people can work on different parts of a train without running into each other. It is quite impressive to see a train lifted up from its bottom parts, search internet, I am sure there are films available.
By the way, in the past people would not trash a train for fun, so the overhauls of the seats were less needed a 100 years ago and a 50 years ago than they are now.
And when the attitude of the public changed, there have been times that the seats were all damaged and dirty most of the time, as the overhaul schedules could not keep up with damage.
