After the first ceramic Belfast and Butler sinks came into being in the late 19th century, French farmhouse sinks followed suit. Emile and Andre Porcher, two French brothers with a factory in northern France, used local clay to make their sinks. The clay used here was of a superior quality to the rough red Staffordshire clay that was commonly used at the Potteries, and allowed the French manufacturers to create a more refined product. Giving new meaning to longetivity, a few of the designs from the end of the 19th century are still in use today. Enjoying the reputation as one of the oldest and most respected names in fireclay sink manufacture, the Porcher name continues to this day in the Loire region of France.
The Normandy Double Bowl Sink features the manufacturer’s logo embossed on the side wall of the sink, giving it an authentic vintage look. Able to accommodate a 60mm basket strainer wastes, the farmhouse sink comes in a non-tarnish brass or Satin chrome finish. Another option is to have a plug and chain, but in this situation the chainstay needs to be drilled into the worksurface.
Although fireclay sinks are easy to maintain, it’s important to follow a few simple guidelines to keep it looking its best.
