This Is Why I Like To Record Phone Calls
A good pal of mine and I were enjoying coffee at my place, just speaking, when she discussed that when she was little she used to prank phone call boys a good deal. I was surprised! This is a not a buddy I'd have anticipated this behavior from, for she's shy and conservative. We'd been pals for more than a year now, however, and this was the first I'd ever heard about her adolescence.
Naturally I was thrilled and wanted to find out more. She got raised in Natick, Massachusetts and was very shy around boys. She doesn’t have many friends but said the anonymity of the telephone permitted her to call boys for her friends and find out who they liked.
I asked her how she got the boys to trust her and she claimed it was easy to pretend she went to a different college and gain their trust that way. Did you record phone calls? I asked, still incredulous. I still had a hard time picturing this shy friend of mine having the guts to make these prank calls. I knew I would not be able to do something so deceitful without laughing and blowing my cover.
Did you disguise your voice at all? I asked. My chum said since she was so quiet in school that not one of the boys she called could recall her voice. But I wished to hear some of the specific stories before I was prepared to actually believe this is what she’d done. She told me that they did not have the technology then to record phone calls unless you recorded them with an audiocassette. I guess some companies and radio shows had the technology, she continued, but this was in the 1970s so there was not as much technology and mobiles were way in the future.
She announced that one time she pretended she was Lily Donovan from the nearby James Truck Buren High College, and called Tommy for her buddy Bethany. Bethany had a crush on Tommy, you see, and she wanted to learn if Tommy liked her. I would have liked to know what happened next, so I kept egging her on even though I could see she was definitely beginning to get uncomfortable. How old were you? We were all eleven or 12. So what did he say? He claimed that he had a crush on Tina, and then when I asked about Bethany he announced that he believed she was all right.
My friend knew what to do next. Tina has a pash on Joey, she told Tommy, and told him to meet them all at the roller skating rink on Thursday at 7pm. Bethany showed up and Tommy showed up, and they started speaking. It is a set up, and they ended up getting together over the bafflement of who had asked them to meet there. My pal had asked them both over and they ended up, years after, and after breaking up and getting together many multiple times over the years, marrying!
I really wished they’d had the technology to record phone calls then so that I could hear that initial phone call. And nobody was any the wiser about Lily Donovan!
