A Clandestine Party That Was Discovered
So here I am in sunny San Diego and I am house sitting for a family that decided to take a month long vacation. The house is right by the water and also has a pool. It has a tremendous view of the ocean and there is plenty of space inside, as well. The house has many large windows to take in the breath taking views. It is empty, however, and I am bored.
As morning was rolling around, I receive a call from a friend. He seems to be looking for something to do. He was a bit anxious as he had just been recalled to duty. He is a member of the armed forces. His name was Bob. Bob wanted to do something fun and memorable before leaving for the front lines. He asked me what my plans were and I told him about my obligation as a house sitter. I began describing the view and the pool. In that moment, he developed plans to throw a party at the house.
Bob was going to invite some of his military friends, as well. As I tried to convey my apprehension, given that I had no authority whatsoever to approve such an event, he replied that we would have it outdoors and that no damage would occur to the home. I was entering my senior year at the university. As such, it was also my last summer of being a kid. I did not plan on house sitting ever again. However, I was a bit weary. Also, I had caused some damage already by spilling food on the rug. I was able to clean it up with a dry wet vacuum, but there remained a very slight trace of the accident.
Bob tried to reassure me that everything would be alright. He thought that having it outdoors would be ideal. There would be less traffic in the home and, therefore, less of a chance for any accident. Also, his friend would bring all the necessary drinks, foods, and disposable cups. My only job was to open the door. He even offered his services to clean up and brought up the possibility of arranging a portable space heater to be brought.
The nights were getting a bit chiller and Bob had taken this into consideration. Also, using the pool, if anyone wanted to, would definitely necessitate the use of some sort of heating equipment. He was going to bring portable outdoor heaters. One of his buddies also had a portable fire pit which we could use. This all seemed like a good idea. Most of the guests would be able to stay warm outside and inside we had some home space heaters to generate heat.
It all seemed to fit. Bob even made it sound lucrative. He thought I could charge a token fee for the house usage. Since we were borrowing the residence, it seemed justified. Also, it would allow us to defer some of the costs or replace anything in case of damage. If everything ran smoothly, I would even make some additional cash. This seemed like a very prudent approach.
However, one thing I was concerned about was the noise and the neighbors. If the party was loud the neighbors might notice and possibly even notify the police. There was also the possibility that even if the authorities were not notified, the neighbors might tell the owner after the return. After considering the worse case scenario, I was willing to live with the risk, given that I had no plans on doing this type of thing ever again. One event we did not take into account was if one of our guests knew the owners. This is when it got interesting.
