How do I tell the difference between a gaming token and a coin?
I’ve got a George III something or other. I’ve been on Google and they both look the same to me. I realise that was the point, but I assume there must be some clear means of identification?
Also, how do I know whether an item is brass or gold (sorry, I know that’s appalling, but I have no jewellery so I’m clueless)
One of the easiest ways to check if it is a coin or a gaming token is to check the date. George III reigned from 1760 to 1820, but the gaming pieces will usually (but not always) have a much earlier date, like 1701.
Usually, the writing on the back of a gaming token is similar to, but different from what was on an actual coin. Since most of the gaming tokens were modeled after the guinea (21 shilling) coin, I’ve included a link that includes pictures of one of the most common tokens, the “Spade” token.
It’s really not appalling that you’re not sure of the metal. One of the things that brass is good at is looking like gold. Someone would have to weigh it to be sure, but gold is a very dense metal–a gold coin seems almost impossibly heavy for its size. A coin dealer would be able to tell you for sure, although if you’ve got a gaming token, it almost certainly is brass. On the other hand, if it is a coin instead of a token, it’s gold.
