How To Camp Safely With Your Dog

Since many dogs love to be outdoors , you can combine your passion for camping and your love for your dog can be easy with a little preparation and a few easy steps to keep them safe so that the pastime of camping can be fun year around, in many locations .

Temperature, regardless of breed or size, is something k9′s can be sensitive to. When camping with your dog its important to make sure you choose a campsite that caters to their requirements. If its particularly hot outdoors, for example , then choose a campsite with adequate shade. On the other hand, choosing a campsite with some exposure to sunshine should be selected if it’s chilly , so they can stay warm.

One of the joys of camping is sitting around an open fire. However, dogs may unintentionally get too close, so this particular pleasure poses a significant danger. Particularly when theyre playing. You can wind up chasing a flaming dog if their long tails swish across the flames. Not fun.

If youre camping during hunting season or in and around hunting areas, be sure to put a brightly colored vest on your dog and its a good notion to wear one yourself. You dont want a hunter to mistake your dog for a deer.

When you are camping in public camping areas, it is critical to pay attention to leash laws and keep you dog close by at all times. Other dogs and people , even if you have the best dog in the world, can cause trouble . Fights between dogs are scary and your dog can become seriously hurt.

Although it is still important to keep a close eye on your dog, if you are in an open area camping, then a leash isn’t required . A dog, that thinks he’s just having fun, can be hurt by deer, moose, bears, skunks, and other critters .

First aid kit. Its a good idea to always have a first aid kit for your dog but when you go camping, its essential . A first aid kit will contain the following items:

* Coated aspirin
* Bandages
* Septic powder
* Small nail scissors
* Ear and eye ointment
* Tick tweezers
* Waterproof surgical tape
* Snake bite kit
* Benadryl
* Antibiotic ointment

A long leash and a stake can give your dog some independence around the campsite, and you dont have to be concerned about them wandering off. If you have a smaller dog, a portable pen works well too.

Pack plenty of food and treats. To avoid having ants crawl around their dog food and food bowl, it is tempting to feed your dog the food you are eating while camping; however, most of what we eat isn’t right for a dog’s digestion and some of it can be poison. While smores are delicious , for example , the chocolate can be toxic to your dog, and besides, they don’t need the sugar. Keep your dog on his normal schedule and stick to his dog food.

Pack water, lots of it. Make sure water is accessible to your dog at all times. They can get overheated easily, and water helps them cool down. Additionally , you dont want your dog lapping out of puddles, rivers or lakes because of algae, which can be toxic not to mention parasites, which are often present in untreated bodies of water.

Take along baggies for waste. While it is tempting to let your dog go au natural, and leave dog excrement on the ground when camping, it is not natural for dogs to be in that environment, and other campers find it displeasing. Utilize appropriate materials and tidy up after your dog. Make sure your dog doesn’t get into the waste of other animals, so keep a close eye on them. A dog’s strong sense of smell can sometimes get them into trouble . A dog that has consumed animal waste, or rolled in it, is the last thing you want.

Bedding. This is for both safety and comfort. Bedding will help your dog at night, when it gets chilly, to regulate its body temperature.

Life jacket. If youre going to be in and around water, its important to make sure you have a doggy life jacket. Many dogs love to swim but they can become tired quickly and they dont have the ability to tell us. An easy way to make sure your dog is safe on the water is by using a life jacket.

Flea & tick repellant. We know that fleas and ticks are prevalent outdoors and cause many diseases. Protect your dog from these insect born sicknesses by using powder, spray, or a collar.

Camping with your pet can be a wonderful time for both of you. Your dog will have the opportunity to explore new areas, experiences, and scents, and you can both enjoy being out of doors. When you take the time to plan in advance and pack accordingly, your dog can have a safe and fun camping experience.
