Boeing Enters To The Space Tourism Race

Boeing has declared that it is prepared to enter into the upcoming mega-business of space tourism, reports the Houston Chronicle. In spite of just lately receiving $20 billion in government subsidies for transatlantic aerospace travel endeavors – a move labeled a violation of international trade law by World Trade Organization judges – Boeing is now knocking on President Obama’s door again. Obama is contacted after having given all that cash. A rise in commercial spaceflight funding is what the company wants.

By 2015, Boeing wants space tourism to be a reality

Boeing is hoping that tourism in space can be possible with a NASA contract by 2015 for the capsule CST-100 to send astronauts to the International Space Station. The amount of seats would allow tourists to come for the ride. The Chronicle reports the capsule is pretty big. The current vice president and general manager of Boeing’s space Exploration division is Brewster Shaw. He discussed that human space commerce may really well happen with Boeing and the CST-100. Right now, Boeing and Space Adventures are working together on the project. Space Adventures is the business that used Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to send private flights to the International Space Station.

Boeing has the horses, however it hasn’t won the competition yet

Boeing is the largest aircraft manufacturer within the whole world, says the Chronicle. Of course, this is in terms of orders, revenue and product. The prime contractor of the space station is Boeing. This adds to its credit. There are lots of things Boeing has on its list of things to do. It needs to get a lot done before tourism in space can really set off. After 2011 when the space shuttle program ends, at least $18 million will be needed for making rockets and capsules to carry NASA astronauts to low-Earth orbit. However, plans for space tourism are estimated to be significantly more costly. Other businesses are competing for the business as well, which should force Boeing to push hard.

Commercial spacecraft something Obama tells Congress needs cash

There are a lot of numbers to work through with the U.S. government. When it comes to funding commercial space flights, those numbers fly faster. In five years, President Obama expects Congress to get enough cash. Congress is supposed to be raising $6 billion. The House hopes to not give up as much money with a $150 million over three years plan. Congress has a plan too, although this plan is more like $1.3 billion in the three year time span. We are seeing a huge financial disconnect. Each part of the government has its own priorities to work with. Without at least the amount of cash the president is calling for, Boeing expects progress toward space tourism to be slow at best. We can get a good estimate of what the industry would cost by looking at how much is cost Cirque du Soleil founder, Guy Laliberte, to go to the International Space Station. He used the Soyuz and it cost $40 million.
