Learn The Way The Challenge Coins Became A Historical Keepsake To Our Society

For those who have never heard of challenge coins don’t get to displeased, although these kind of coins have existed since WWI. The very first known use of the coin was in military combat units. It all started with pilots. In the First World War a lieutenant had a small coin specially made for him identifying his flying squadron. The lieutenant provided a coin to each member of the unit to keep as a lucky keepsake.

A pilot has been shot down when he was trying to make his way back to friendly lines when he was picked up by a French military unit. It was recognized there were a lot of enemy spies in the area so the French commander was about to order the pilot shot as a spy when he took notice of the small coin the pilot was carrying. The leader recognized the symbol of the American air unit and delayed ***executing the pilot until they could attempt to verify the young man membership in that unit. The coin*** literally saved that pilots life and the use as a coin to identify membership in a unit was created.

Borrowing from their research of military history cadets as West Point along with other military academies started providing challenge coins for the students of their schools. Losing the coin was reason for the cadet to earn demerits or was required to write an extensive essay expressing the importance of these coins before they were issued a new coin.

Several time clubs that wanted their membership kept secret in these academies had coins make for their members to use as a means to identifying them as members. This came in very useful for identifying members of these secret units or clubs.

It wasn’t very long before fraternities and sororities in schools followed the challenge coins as means of identifying current and previous people in their organizations. Even the super secret Skulls club at Harvard applied these coins to distinguish members.

Many other clubs, in universities and out, have been using these special coins to make sure that members only information was only given to members that could produce their coins. The organizations which make these coins are incredibly happy that they are so popular across numerous levels of our society.

Lapel pins replicas of these coins have shown up in companies just like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America that has caused their popularity to spread far and wide. These days many companies both large and small are using pin replicas of these coins.

Now that you’ve heard of challenge coins, you might want to have your own coins constructed if you start up a club of any sort to identify your associates. You may even only want to cook some up as keepsakes. Just so you know many people are producing collections of various types of these historical coins along with military rings.
