Silver is a free membership that you can sign up for when anytime as soon as you connect your box to an internet source. With Silver you have full access to xbox live, you can download old games, new xbla games, dlc, songs, shows, basically everything that is available from xbl you can access with silver. You can even communicate with other players on your friends list, and you will still get the patches and updates for the games you are playing. The only thing you can’t actually do is play online with silver, you have to purchase the gold membership to be able to play against other players online. So if you want all the perks of having xbl without actually playing multi-player online games than silver is exactly what you want, plus it’s free!
