The future of wood has evolved
Sustainability and careful environmental structures are becoming widespread on the political agenda as part of our everyday life, with the building and construction industry leading the way.
Consumer attitudes have changed in recent years; it is no longer deemed acceptable to use unsustainable products or practices- an attitude which has ultimately had a positive impact on the building industry as it looks to satisfy these demands.
Architects, contractors and builders alike are increasingly integrating eco-friendly products and technologies into projects- most notably in the leisure industry. Kebony, an award-winning sustainable substitute for tropical hardwood and preservative-treated timber, is one such product.

Through a revolutionary environmentally friendly process dubbed ‘Kebonization’, sustainable wood species such as maple, pine and beech are given the same aesthetic and physical properties as rainforest timbers. The wood is impregnated with a patent mixture based on furfuryl alcohol, a liquid produced from agricultural crop waste, which then reacts within the wood fibres.
The process permanently alters the characteristics of a non-durable timber, giving it increased durability and dimensional stability.
Modified wood provides a viable alternative to endangered tropical hardwoods such as teak, which is not only an expensive resource but one that is rapidly diminishing through on-going deforestation. A third of the world’s rainforests have disappeared in the last 50 years- a loss of around six million hectares a year, which is the equivalent of 8.5 million football pitches. In choosing modified wood, this precious resource and the biodiversity can be conserved.
Through the effective ‘reinvention’ of wood, modified wood products such as Kebony offer new possibilities for the material. they have a longer life cycle than other wood, acting like a carbon ‘sink’ by locking in CO2 for seven times longer than their untreated counterparts. This ultimately means that wood can be used in place of less environmentally friendly materials such as steel and concrete- a trend seen increasingly in eco-friendly leisure builds.
On anaesthetic level, wood is generally chosen for its natural rustic beauty, which lends itself particularly well to projects such as eco spas, hotels and public parks. Kebony, in particular, acquires a silver-grey patina over time and evolves with the natural landscape as part of the living environment.
