What fun things are there to do in San Fransisco for 4th of July? Has anyone been there for the 4th before? Can you actually see the fireworks thru the fog? Also what kind of clothes should I pack (I live in Phoenix — so my average July temp here is about 110 every day). Thank you!

Pack a jacket, and maybe a hat/scarf if you’re not used to the wind. But don’t overdo it with the luggage, its not Canada. At worse, it’ll be in the 60s and windy. It rarely rains in July. And temperatures certainly won’t drop much below that.

If it’s going to be nice and clear, invest in an Independence Day dinner boat cruise. This is the best way to see the fireworks, with the skyline in the background, and the colors reflecting on the water. And they usually do full service prime rib or seafood buffets on board.

Do check the weather report though. Fog creates a strange situation. You won’t see the actual blasts, but you’ll hear it. And after a couple seconds of delay, you’ll see the plumes of smoky, colored fog light up. Just my opinion, but it’s best described as more creepy than beautiful… because it looks more like the city’s being bombarded by some mysterious alien beams from a B-rated sci-fi movie than fireworks.
