is downtown saint louis a safe place to live?

I am considering moving to Saint Louis- the downtown area to be specific. I may be taking the metro link for transporation. I was wondering if the downtown saint louis area was fairly safe? ( i know that no place is safe, but obviously some places are safer then other like compton, brooklyn, etc) – Please give honest answers. Thanks!

Yes it is. We have quite a few friends who live in lofts down there. The biggest annoyance is being stopped by pan handlers looking for spare change.
