As Economy Suffers Grandma’s Memorabilia Comes Out of the Attic
As consumers search for ways of paying bills in a recessionary economy, grandma’s favorite heirlooms and collectibles are coming out of the closet and going on the auction block.
Historical and political memorabilia is one area that has seen a particularly strong increase in activity during the past year. Items from Presidents George Washington to Barack Obama are being dusted off and literally reappearing from mothballs as consumers hope that the items passed down from generation to generation will prove to be a lost treasure – and a valuable one.
While items from such eras the presidential term of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln always command attention from collectors and dealers alike, an item does not have to be that old to have value. In fact, many modern day Presidents such as John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan are highly prized by collectors.
How much can your item be worth? Common items might only be worth a few dollars, but the older the item, the more scarce it is and the more prized it is by collectors can increase that value tremendously. It’s not uncommon to see vintage campaign buttons and posters sell for thousands of dollars and autographs of early Presidents for $25,000 or more.
So how do you know if the item that the item that grandma stored away fifty years ago is worth an ice cream sundae or the down payment on a new home? You have to do your research. Here’s a few tips that will help you determine the value of your political memorabilia items.
- Condition is always important to collectors, so be sure to keep your items away from sunlight (especially paper items) and in a cool dry place. The better the condition, the higher the price.
- Search the web for hints as to the value of your item. Use the various search engines like www.Google.com . But remember, minor variations in an item can cause the item to be worth much more or less than a similar item, so look closely to be sure it matches.
- Free appraisal sites such as www.appraisalbuddy.com can be a great way to find out the value of your items –for free!
- Look for signs that your item is an official item issued by a campaign committee or inaugural committee. Official items typically sell for more than un-official ones.
- Scarcity drives value. Items available to the general public like magazines and newspapers generally sell for less. Items distributed to VIP’s or issued in limited quantities tend to be worth more.
