Factors Which Determine the Durability of Premium Second Hand Cars
As people venture shopping for premium second hand cars, several pertinent questions tend to be bugging them, and causing them anxiety at the back of their minds. One of those is the question as to how long the premium used cars they buy are likely to last.
You come to realize that second hand cars are unlike brand new cars (which, at purchase time, come with certain definite expectable useful lives). As you buy a second hand car, whether premium or not, you will know that part of the expectable useful life the car had at the time of original purchase – when it was brand new – has already been used up. Of course, theoretically speaking, working out how much ‘life’ is remaining in the car would be just a question of establishing its expectable life at the time of manufacture or original purchase, and then subtracting from that the period of time it has been in use. But practically we know that this is not an ideal model because the ‘expectable useful life’ is not always attainable: whether or not it is actually attained depends on several factors. In other words, for instance, a car which would otherwise have lasted very long may end up aging prematurely, on account of poor usage.
We end up in a situation where people shopping for premium second hand cars have to use some other criteria, to work out how long the cars are likely to last (that is, in other words, the potential durability of the cars). And as it turns out, there are at least three factors which determine such potential durability of second hand cars. Those include:
1. The respective brands and models of the cars: simply put, there are some car brands and models which are known to be durable, and others which are known to be of dubious durability. One common misconception people seem to have is the one where they reckon that, just because a given car brand is considered ‘premium’ it has to be durable. In actual fact, you come to realize that some car brands which are considered ‘premium’ are also in the least durable cars category. The upshot here is that you need to undertake some sort of research, to establish which premium cars are actually durable, and ensure that the one you eventually buy is in that category of reasonably durable cars.
2. The care previously accorded to the cars: a premium used car may be of one of the brands associated with durability, but if it is not well cared for over its lifetime, chances are that it (still) won’t last long. By just checking the premium used cars’ service records, and making enquiries with respect to the profiles of their previous owners and the conditions in which they have been previously operated, you can get an idea as to which ones are likely to be durable, and which ones are not likely to be durable.
3. The utility already drawn from the cars: this is the situation we alluded to in our introduction where, all other factors held constant, the longer a car has been in use, the shorter its (likely) remaining useful lifespan. Cars, like all other machines, come with definite useful lives, and while there are things which can be done to marginally increase these useful lives, we generally expect relatively newer cars to outlast relatively older cars.
