For ages the Brits have been travelling down to the Costas of Spain when they want to retire in the sun. Like the Sunbirds of the United States the people of northern climes who hate the chilly weather and worship the sun flock southwards and set up their exclusive communities by the sea.
If you’re from Britain then Spain always appears to be the first travelling option as there are already so many Britons living there, there’s no pressure learn any Spanish as the only Spaniard people you’re likely to ever see will be watering your garden or cleaning your bathroom and since Jif was renamed Cif the language barrier there has been overcome forever! Spain, Europe’s last Fascist dictatorship until after Franco died in 1975 and the nation where stabbing up cows and throwing donkeys off church towers is regarded by some to be intrinsic to the nation’s cultural identity.
I think that’s why I’d prefer to move to Portugal myself, We’ve beaten Spain at war as often as we’ve beaten France or Germany but we’ve had treaties with Portugal longer than we have with any other country in the world. Even if you weren’t to retire there but just buy a house with a mortgage in Portugal you could enjoy all the benefits of owning property abroad, a holiday home, a rental and a solid investment in a place that’s not synonymous with east-end criminals and feral binge-drinking youths taking out their social inadequacies on the local population. Portuguese property finance can be as simple and straightforward as it is here in the UK if you go to the right providers.
If you’re not intending to move to Portugal but would like to holiday there to get to know the country and its people then it’s easy to get carried away, the beaches, the countryside, the towns and cities all entrance and captivate. Just mind out you don’t get too carried away and end up having to write pleading letters to your mother asking her to send money to Portugal!
