Portugal Medal

Matador

Over the past weeks, tennis fans from around the globe have bought some flights to Barcelona to see one of the most gifted tennis players of all time, Nadal, who is taking his place in the Barcelona Open this week. Despite Rafael Nadal’s tremendous sporting career, it is easy to overlook that he is just twenty-four years old! To date, Rafa has already won all four Grand Slams and a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. (The only other tennis star to share this with Rafael Nadal, is former world number one, Angre Agassi). Furthermore, Rafa helped his country win the Davis Cup in 2009, which took place in Catalonia.

The French Open, one of Rafa’s favourite tournaments, will take place in Paris next month. The tournament has a notorious reputation on the tennis circuit, as being one of the most difficult because playing on clay, doesn’t come naturally to all players. Even all time tennis greats like Pistol Pete and John McEnroe failed to be crowned winners at the French Open! Plan your cheap flights to Paris if you would like to see if Rafa can lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires at the French Open for the sixth time. Deservingly labelled as the ‘King of Clay,’ Rafa has won this prestigious Grand Slam five times, beating the likes of other tennis legends, for example Roger Federer, along the way.

Outside his hectic timetable, the King of Clay helps a number of charities, like Laureus. This charity promotes using sport as a tool in order to encourage positive social change. He is also a fantastic role model for children hoping to become professional tennis stars one day. Even if you aren’t a budding tennis player, this is a great sport to be enjoyed as a hobby, especially when you are on holiday. Arrange your Faro flight and you’ll be able to enjoy a few games of tennis in the stunning Algarve. Take advantage of your time in Portugal and get practising on clay courts, which are rarely found in the UK.
