The Art Of Making Dog Portraits

What makes animal portrait painting different from human portraiture is that animals don’t like to pose. It takes a lot of hard work on the part of the artist to maintain the animal’s attention. One female artist from Wilmington specializes in this particular field. She belongs to the well known family, the Delawares Her grandfather was the artist who did many of the famous collection of sea and landscape paintings. At the young age of 3, this female artist began painting as well. Read this site if you want pets portraits information.

Most of her drawings were those of animals. After a one man show she had at the local library at age 10, she began illustrating books for children at age 12. Because of her Philadelphia teachers, she also learned different kinds of dance routines and steps. Among the solo dances she did for the many years she was a dancer was a death scene depicting her accidentally drinking from a kerosene lamp.

Of all the animal portraits she has made, her main interest is dog portraits. It is interesting to watch her start a dog’s portrait. As the dog’s owner makes an effort to keep the dog from moving, she makes as many sketches as she possibly can.

While she tries to find the best pose that would suit the dog, her pencil just seems to fly over her sketchpad. She gives compliments to the dog frequently as she is doing all of this. She uses different kinds of props to grab the animal’s attention. She also requisitions all the photographs the owner has with the request that she may make duplicates for her own collection. In determining the colors to use, she collects snips of hair from the tail, ears, and tummy of the dog. These snips she files under each dog’s name. She decides on a pose and a composition with the perfect background to use for the photograph. The type of dog or animal determines the latter. She sat in a duck blind and took sketches of her surroundings for one portrait featuring a Chesapeake Bay retriever.

Dogs already have their own views, just like people, she observed. One story that shows how true this was was when an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and then chewed up her painting. It must have been a terrible painting if he had to get some form of medical treatment after showing his disapproval.

If the portrait features a beagle or a basset, she includes a paw print in the scenery and puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back. She even made abstract backgrounds, done with the aid of her own dog’s paw. Animals don’t frequently show cooperation. A model ran off with a female dog, putting a stop to whatever portrait painting was supposed to take place that day. When an animal’s portrait is being painted, the unusual is usually already expected.
