7 Tips For Creating Artistic Glamour Images
Nude portraits undoubtedly belong to the most popular subgenres of glamour photography. However, it’s far from easy to shoot aesthetically flawless pictures without falling into profanity – so how can the latter be avoided? I would like offer you some general insight on how artistry can be achieved in shooting nude portraits.
Nude portraits are not about our physical desires they are all about art. However bold they may appear, the chief goal of a good nude portrait is to evoke thoughts and deliver spiritual pleasure. Enough talk of abstract matters – we need some practical knowledge!

- Balancing artistry and vulgarity is a must: you dont want the latter, you want the former. Make emphasis on body shapes and texture. Learn to trust your photographer’s intuition – if you manage to develop a firm understanding of what will work and what will not, you shall benefit from it in the future;
- Unless you’re shooting a naked pirate, don’t succumb to the temptation of dressing up your model in pricely tokens: nude photography is about a human body, not jewelry and fancy trinkets. To create an impression of glamour and elegance, you only need something pretty and sophisticated to complement the composition – but not to draw the viewer’s attention away from your model;
- For practical purposes one should always avoid using so-called “hot lights” in a studio. At all times, cold lights are more appropriate – for the sake of saving electric power, not sweating like a pig and having more space for creativity. You would also want to obtain some soft-boxes to get more diffused light. Actually, always try to make light as soft as possible it creates a proper mood;
- Don’t let the laws of optics stand in your way to creating a nude masterpiece: the shooting angle can alter the proportions and make your model either too tall and thin or too short. You dont want any of that, do you?
- Unleash your artistic nature. Different poses, lighting angles or backdrops and accessories will certainly deliver you several great variations on the same motif;
- Shoot, shoot, shoot and did I mention shoot? I mean it – to call your session successful, you need lots of material to look through. Even hardcore glamour photographers make some several thousand pictures in one studio session so they could later pick really astounding images;
- Establish a connection with your model. She is more than merely a model, but your best friend and a co-author. Your model is the second most important person behind the creative activity – if not the first. If your model feels uncomfortable, you wont get anywhere even if youre Helmut Newton!
