Obama Internet Plan Expands To Contain Greater Monitoring

The Obama internet policy has expanded to consist of something besides more broadband for every person. The Obama administration, along with intelligence and law enforcement agencies, want even more monitoring powers online, which can be part of a new bill going before Congress sometime in the near future. If these new laws pass, it will grant the government greater access for surveillance purposes. You will find few methods of electronic communication that aren’t already under monitoring. This will shorten that list even further.

Obama internet surveillance plan

According to the NY Times, the White House wants to pass a bill expanding surveillance and wiretap accessibility for intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The bill builds upon existing jurisdictions. The White House is on board, and the Obama Internet surveillance bill will likely go to Congress next year. The amount of communications that the federal already has accessibility to is ample, which will expand if the bill passes. Land lines and cellular phones are easy enough to get into. However, there are some forms of electronic communication which are private and encrypted.

Not good for designers

Restrictions tend to favor the corporations that can afford to keep up with them. A large tech firm with a nice engineering staff will hardly be fazed, whereas a small startup will be disadvantaged. Recent bans of the Blackberry because of the way Research In Motion designed it occurred, over exactly this type of issue. The machine keeps emails and other messages encrypted and private, off limits even to the business itself. RIM is working double time to comply with surveillance needs of governments. Other companies, such as Skype and other voice over internet protocol or VOIP companies will have to re-engineer their products to keep up also. Law enforcement and intelligence officials have complained that their surveillance abilities are “going dark,” as fewer people rely totally on phone communications.

Got their ear on you

There are few methods of communication, aside from speaking in person, that aren’t subject to domestic surveillance. Obama has been mum about repealing some of the almost Orwellian laws which were part of Bush domestic spying controversies. Though further potential encroachment on privacy seems almost egregious, there is the security issue to deal with. The government maintains that it isn’t overstepping its bounds in requesting greater access. There are people that do pose a threat to public safety that could be caught using these methods. However, this kind of power is easily misused.
