Will damaged palm tree bark repair itself?

I damaged a palm tree in my garden, and bark about the area of my hand has been stripped leaving soft inner “flesh” (sorry I do not know the proper names, I am not a gardener). The tree is about 20 ft high. I am worried I will have accidentally killed it because I’ve been told palms cannot heal their stems/trunks.

There are many different palms. Palms do not repair them selfs. It will eventually become a blemish or scar on the plant. I dont think you killed it. Without a picture to see the variety and damage, its hard to say.
