Sources of Scrap Copper

Copper has many uses in the home and that makes the home one of the best sources of scrap copper. Because of it electrical conductivity you will find it in electrical wiring including light switches and vacuum cleaners. It is used in water and gas pipes, pots and pans, wall tiles, roof tiles and awnings as well as anything else you need in your home that is to be made of metal.

Wire is the best source of scrap copper and there is much of it in your home. The electrical wires and your computer wires have it. If your house is old you will find copper wire everywhere. In an old house there may be an old water heater or some heating device that maybe made of it. Automotive parts such as motors from some of the old vehicles are also a good source of scrap copper.

Mining copper is a difficult and arduous task thus making copper a very expensive commodity. Of all metal alloys copper is by far the most demanded in the scrap metal business and the metal that gets the best price to the seller. Unfortunately, because of the demand for copper there are thieves that are ready to dismantle a vacant new house or old house to remove and sell the copper wiring and other copper that there may be in it. As a result, honest scrap metal buyers are very careful from whom they are buying their copper.

Modern day copper has its roots in the development of electricity for commercial use in the Nineteenth Century. Electrical wires are the best source of scrap copper. Scrap copper recently sold for $5 per pound. The best selling copper is what has been stripped from the electrical cords and separated into good, better, best piles of copper. In other words, the very best would be clean and shiny; the other two would be dependent upon how devoid they may be of any paint, waxes or other materials that may be permanently stuck to the copper. Clean copper brings more money.
