I’m not sure that I agree with christheclark fully about the movie. It has it’s naff moments or fake heart attacks, but that is all that I can see that brings it down a little. However, as you are watching it, if you just accept that this is how the heart attacks will be shown it doesn’t seem too bad. I think the movie is very good, especially in it’s portrayal of L. You just have to take it as it is.
It’s a fair bit different to the anime/manga, but which film isn’t different to it’s book. It mashes things up a little but I think they needed to to condense such a huge story into such a short time. It is worth a watch to form your own opinion on it. However, I wouldn’t watch it until you have seen the entire anime, as it might spoil parts of it for you.
You can watch the movie in about 6 parts on Veoh.com. This is good for finding any anime/asian films. If you type english dub into the search with what you’re looking for you might find it. Having said that, you can’t (as far as I am aware) get the film in english dub as of yet, but it’s just as good with subtitles.
The one thing I will say about you wanting to watch anime in english is this:
Try once or twice watching something in English and then re-watching it subtitled. You will notice instantly how much of the story you are missing by watching it in English. This might not bother you, but if you are really into anime I’d suggest trying it as you will learn way more about the story line through the subtitles as they are a more accurate translation.
