Can Learning To Detox Your Body Enhance Your Natural Defenses
I’ve always considered myself to be fairly healthy and in reasonably good shape. I’ve hardly ever been ill, and don’t recall even having any kind of cold of virus – or certainly not that lasted more than half a day or so. So when I completely lost all my energy and was feeling run down all the time it was quite a shock to my system, and getting out of bed in the morning was becoming quite a chore. I’d been to see the doctor on many occasions, and had undergone several test, but they all came back negatve.
I finally went to see an alternative health therapist one day who intimated that I was in need of a natural detox, and put some effort into learning how to detox the body and how my eating habits may be affecting my health. From what people were telling me it was clear that detoxing had a lot to offer, so figured it was a worthy investment of my time to at least check it out, and why so many alternative and complementary health practitioners advocate healthy detox diets and suggest getting started with the 7 day detox diet so strongly.
She also hinted to me to try a relaxing foot detox. I now use a foot spa about twice a week, if you don’t want to invest in a foot spa, the detox foot patch can work just as well – although your don’t get the relaxing foot massage at the same time
Here’s what I learnt to detox your body.
Herbal teas are just as good as water
Making sure you take in plenty of fluids is very important while you are following a detox diet because it will help purge excessive toxins from your body. It also helps to prevent constipation, reduce bloating, and improves your complexion. You should aim for about 2 to 3 liters a day, but increase that when the weather is hot.
As a rule of thumb, for every hour that your exercise each day, drink an extra 2 glasses of water. The healthiest type of water is filtered tap water. Keep your water at room temperature as it’s more refreshing that way. If the thought of drinking that much water is overbearing, try herbal teas as well – loose leaf tea is the better option if it’s available. Green tea, horsetail, camomile and roibosch (or redbush) are particularly good as their hidden ingredients help the detox process. Roibosch (Redbush) tea has other health benefits too as it is rich in antioxidants.
Do You Need To Go Organic
You do not need to switch to a totally organic diet on a detox diet, especially as the cost can be very high, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.
If you can’t buy many organic foods, don’t worry. It’s more important that you eat plentiful amounts of fresh foods, whether they are organic or not, instead of eating too few of them. Having said that, there are some very beneficial health reasons of eating organic food on a healthy detox diet.
Organic foods are produced without the use of artificial pesticides and fertilizers, so they contain the lowest possible amounts of artificial, potentially toxic chemicals (such as nitrates). Organic farming is a hotly debated and controversial topic because there is evidence that the ‘cocktail’ effect of these pesticides may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.
Organic foods are subject to a lot less processing. That means they contain no hydrogenated fats, artificial additives, preservatives or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Certain organic foods taste better and have more flavor.
