Bikaner, The Golden Sand City, Creates a Dream Like Image for Tourist
Bikaner is popularly referred to as the ‘Camel City of Rajasthan’. Bikaner lies on the ancient caravan routes that linked Western/Central Asia and North India with the seaports of Gujarat. Bikaner thus flourished as a major trade center during the medieval period. The kingdom of Bikaner was established by a Rathore Prince, Rao Bikaji, son of the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodhaji in 1488 A.D. He was able to carve out a state named after him after hardship of 30 years. Let us explore the attractions of the Bikaner city.
Junagarh Fort: - This fort was built by Raja Rai Singhji, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, who ruled form 1571 to 1612 AD. Junagarh fort is considered one of India’s most impressive fort complexes. It’s exquisitely decorated interiors are in an excellent state of preservation. The complex consists of palaces, courtyards, pavilions, and balconies. The walls are adorned with carved stones, marble, paintings, and inlaid semi-precious stones. A different ruler built each palace in the complex over the centuries.
Lalgarh Palace: - The Lalgarh Palace is one of the most exquisite masterpieces constructed in the latter half of the 19th Century. An oasis amidst the endless drudgery of the Thar desert. Made out of red sand stone, the Lalgarh palace has red hue and thus the name Lalgarh. Built in the year 1902, this palace was constructed by Maharaja Ganga Singh in memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh. This architectural splendor reflecting a fusion of Rajput, Mughal and British architecture was designed by Sir Swinton Jacob.
Sadul Museum:- Situated on the first floor of Lallgarh Palace, this museum depicts the lives & times of the three successive Maharajas of Bikaner i.e. Maharaia Ganga Singhji, Maharaja Sadul Singhii & Maharaja Karni Singhji through the various artifacts & photographs displayed in 22 rooms.
Prachina Museum:- It’s a small museum located in the great Junagarh Fort. The museum is dedicated to royal costumes & textiles, family portraits of the former rulers, their changing cultural milieus from generation to generation, their response to western influences, their ritualism & religious accessories, and the legacy of their patronage which survives in Bikaner’s contemporary arts and crafts till date. Craft demonstrations by leading artisans of Bikaner are held from time to time.
Karni Devi Temple:- The Karni Mata temple is situated 30 kms from Bikaner, in the small village called Deshnok. The temple is dedicated to an early fifteenth century mystic who was considered to be a reincarnation of goddess Durga. The temple is considered very holy.A unique feature of the temple is that it offers shelters to thousands of rats. According to myths, these rats are the re-born descedants of the Charan clad. Rats here are worshipped. People from far and wide come to pay religious tribute to Karni mata.
Apart from the above listed places, there are various traditional and ethnic places to visit. Bikaner is the prime attraction of Rajasthan tourism due to its architecturally marvelous forts and places. Go through Royals Rajasthan Tourism and Travel Guide and you will definitely meet your expectation in every aspect.
