Alans Medals
Collecting military medals and military ribbons is a fascinating past-time that is truly rewarding. Any service medal collector will tell you that these are not simply objects to be kept in a display box. These collector’s items represent the bravery and dedication of war veterans in days gone by. War medals are awarded for campaign service, long service, loyalty, accomplishment, acts of bravery and heroism – they are not merely decorative objects but instead symbols of the values that all of humanity should strive to uphold.
On occasion a person may be given a military medal that was passed on from a relative. For some people this may spark some interest into the different types of medals that one could collect and a fulfilling hobby begins. Some great places to find medals would be car boot sales, antique fairs, garage sales or medal collectors’ fairs. The problem arises when you already have a substantial collection of your own and are searching for any particular piece. You could spend years going from fair to fair or sale to sale, never finding what you are looking for. A great way to find these missing pieces would be to find an online service medal store.
The great thing about an online store is that it is probably run by someone who has the same passion for collecting these items, so you know that the military ribbons and us medals will probably be in good condition when you get them. If you feel a little concerned about purchasing a military medal that you have not been able to inspect properly have a look around the site and email the owner. After some correspondence you are bound to get a feel for the situation.
Often war medals come at a hefty price when you are browsing items at a medal collector’s fair; especially if the military medal in question is a particularly rare beauty. You could spend hours haggling over a price and either walk away with nothing or walk away feeling as though you’ve just been robbed. Finding an online store means that the proprietor will probably have some decent prices. Generally an online service medal store will have the best prices around, so you would be missing out by choosing not to make a purchase.
Another good thing about buying your military ribbons from an online store is that there is bound to be a great selection. So if you are only collecting a specific type of ribbon you will probably be able to find exactly the one you are looking for on the site. If you are the type of person who believes that any and all military ribbons are worth collecting, such an online store would be your dream come true. Chances are that you could probably complete your entire collection by simply browsing one web page!
The first thing you learn when you start your military medal collection is that you NEVER clean them yourself. This simple task could effectively ruin the medal and leave a gaping hole in your display cabinet where your prized medal should be. Purchasing US medals from antique fairs and garage sales often means that the medals are incredibly dirty, slightly damaged and possibly even without their ribbons. Purchasing your war medals online means that the collectibles reach you in great condition: clean, shiny and with all ribbons attached.
If you encounter a service medal that you may not particularly want as a part of your collection it is always worth it to buy the medal anyway. At a later point you may meet a fellow collector who really needs that particular item who has a military medal you have been searching for. A simple trade means that both parties get their perfect collection of war medals and a “fellow collection pal” as well.
A military medal is so much more than just a collector’s item. Such a medal may be the only reminder of a certain person’s life on Earth and so serves to remind us that in some small way, everyone manages to leave an imprint on someone else’s life. With a little research effort it may be possible to find information on the original owners of the war medals in your collection. This little bit of extra knowledge is what makes your medals so much more than a mere collection of artifacts. Instead your collection becomes a tribute to the members of the military service who gave up so much of their time for their country.
