“Are you black or are you white?”?

At school I took a psychology class about racial/ethnic identities and we had to write an essay about ourselves and the first question was how do you identify. I am half African and half white and I am from Maine, which is a white dominant culture with little (if any, depending in where exactly you live) diversity. I answered the question by saying I identify as being an African American woman but I also went on to talk about how, being black in a white dominated place I was always the “token black person” which made me feel like I am never “white enough” for the white people but at the same time coming to school where there is diversity I feel “not black enough” for the black people.

Is it wrong to feel this way? Does anyone else feel this way? How do you deal with this?

I am proud of who I am, how I look and where I come from but I just feel like I have this inner turmoil I don’t know how to address.

The whole premise that race is relevant, – is erroneous, – in and of itself.

Instead, the teacher could simply ask what culture you identify with. – You can’t go wrong with that. But then I guess it wouldn’t stir up dissension, – like ‘race’ question did.

If you identify with more of a black-cultured society, – then great, – talk about that. If you identify with a white culture, – whatever that might be, – then that’s fine too.

Just like Las Vegas and gambling, -playing their game, – you’ll always ‘loose’ in the end. You shouldn’t play their game on their terms.

You’re an American, – period.
