How many can remember the early metal detector craze back in the mid-to-late 1970s? No? Well it happened. And it was fun. Now, you might ask: How does a metal detector work? The answer is simple science; electromagnetism to be exact. The design premise is simple. The detector emits a magnetic field, typically generated from an attached battery, and when some trace of metal comes into contact with the electromagnetism, a small magnetic circuit is created and a signal sent to the detector’s transmitter. This signal is subsequently amplified resulting in a beeping or buzzing sound. If this sounds like basic science, then you’d be right. The strength of the detector is primarily determined by the amount of electromagnetic current created and how sensitive the on-board transmitter and amplifier are.
Detectors come in a variety of sizes, power, and function. For example, there are detectors uniquely designed for underwater use as well as for prospecting certain types of metals such as gold.
