Hard Times
What is the best novel to compare Hard Times to?
In terms of industrial novels, I’ve done my own research but I can’t seem to find many novels that would be good to compare Hard Times to in terms of an essay. The only one I’m considering so far is “Nice Work” by David Lodge, but I can’t find much work on that.
All answers are greatly appreciated.
Hmm. I’m not sure I’d pick the Lodge, because it’s somewhat satirical and comic, though perhaps the contrast would itself be interesting.
19th-century novelist Elizabeth Gaskell wrote some industrial and working-class novels. “North and South” or “Mary Barton” would be possibilities.
In the early 20th century, in the U.S., there was a whole genre of possibly relevant literature, some of it having to do with union organizing. See the second site below.
