If you were an art historian, what major style period would you say had the greatest impact on western art?

I think that the Renaissance era in European history has had the most sustained impact on western art, culture, architecture, textiles, music, etc – it even introduced notions like chivalry to the Europeans. Incidentally, they had a hand in building many of the bath-houses from that time, as a way of encouraging native europeans to bathe more frequently.

Aside from an appreciation of the aesthetic beauty of living, the main reason the Renaissance was so significant in European Art History was that it enabled the end of the Dark Ages of Europe.

The Renaissance was brought first to Southern Europe (initially Spain) via the Moors from Africa.

These free-wheeling bohemians spearheaded the development of a culture which allowed some of the geniuses of European art to flourish, hence the term ‘Renaissance’ which is french for rebirth or new beginning.
I am not sure, but I think one of these geniuses was Michaelangelo? These days a Renaissance Man/Woman is kind of like an erudite polymath.

It is not something I hear people talk about very much these days, so it could be an original angle for your essay, and you can pull together the necessary citations quite quickly, either from the net or your library.
