In the movie garden state theres a giant underground canyon; does that exist somewhere?

What did they base that on? Is there an actual underground phenomena like that somewhere? Is it theoretically possible?

Haven’t seen the movie, but yes there are giant underground cave systems, most famously in Borneo.
