The original blueprint had each dragon with five claws – a myth is that the wall was first finished; during the supremacy of the Qing dynasty the feudal monarch regarded the fifth claw as a signal of pure irreverence, as all the royal palaces featured four claw dragons. He then slashed one of the claws of each dragon.
