Creating An Art Deco Home
Enthusiasm and hopefulness of post war America and Europe initiated the foundation for the Art Deco approach to home decorating. This type of decorating gave people a renewed feeling and brought in a new era. The distinctive of this style is a combination of materials and jewelry design, fashion and architecture that manifest into an interior showcase of lustrous, smooth and defined lines. Here’s how to make Art Deco a part of your home interior.
Colors
A minimal amount of color is used with this style of decoration. The major color schemes are black, red with black, white with black and green with black. Emphasis are on chrome and gold while soft grey and pastel blues produce a moderate touch.
Lighting
Floor lamps, ceiling lamps or lights, table lamps and wall candle holders are the way to construct Art Deco lighting. Designs are straight and minimal. Materials such as glass and bronze were used to create most Art Deco lamps, additionally they were adorned with geometrical shapes and flowers. For instance table lamp designs were made with vivid nickel and white, transparent, frosted or multihued. Candle holders were made with aluminum, bronze, silver coated or steel.
Furniture
Sleek in design. Comfortable and modern, many furniture designs were made with a chrome base that rather gives the appearance of a chic rocking chair. Wood pieces were vastly lacquered. For instance strikingly lacquered wood structures were equipped with complimenting fine white leather. Lots of velvet was used in the upholstery softening the austere form incorporating a sumptuous effect.
Flooring
Marble in black or white is typical of Art Deco floors. The chess board or black and white tiles are a common look on floors from this era. Rugs were used in neutral or deep colors of black, grey and brown with designs and patterns, especially flowers.
Surfaces
Majority of surfaces are bland lacking any texture. Velvet is used at length along with leather manifesting in a clean flat surface. Plain and wood pieces were accentuated with wood veneers to add a bit more complexity.
Accessories
Mirrors have a nickel, silver or chrome finish and ornamented with animals such as peacocks or deer and geometric forms. Hued or pearl beads adorn bronze figurines. Desk sets consisting of pen and pencils were quite popular with a smooth solid base. Chrome, nickel and silver were used for door handles and candlesticks while vases were made of frosted glass or black and white marble. Glass vases reveal Cameos when layers of transparent glass or white is removed.
Art Deco is a interesting and unique way to decorate a home, but every piece must originate from that era.
