Amid Mayhem, U.S. Citizens Urged To Vacate Egypt Quickly

United States expatriates and vacationers are being urged to leave Egypt right away by the United States State Department as violent rioting on the streets has intensified. The Associated Press accounts the State Department has established chartered planes to get U.S. individuals out, however efforts to notify everyone of the Egypt evacuation have been only semi-successful due to the Egyptian government’s Internet lock down. American’s will not have to take out a pay day loan to leave, the expense is being covered.

The reason for difficulties in evacuating Egypt

The AP spoke with Janice Jacobs who is the assistant Secretary of State. She said that Cyprus plans to start seeing U.S. expatriates and others flying in Monday from Egypt. The process of evacuation is expected to take several days, and each moment is vital as protests against the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak continue to intensify. A crackdown on Facebook, Twitter and most Internet usage in general has made spreading word of Egypt’s evacuation days more difficult. There have been freezes on the Internet occurring as far as China where even the word “Egypt” has been disabled in searches in fear that the Communist party might get rebelled against by Chinese civilians.

Cairo airport not doing good

With all of the foreigners trying to get out of Egypt, the Cairo international airport has had a ton of airport. There have been fist fights going on within the terminals. Other drama happens too including shouting and confusion. Delayed or canceled flights are common, and staffing is woefully inadequate because 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfews make staffing almost extremely hard. As of Monday, only 26 of the 126 scheduled EgyptAir flights were operational according to AP while EgyptAir also had to shut down for 14 hrs.

“It’s an absolute zoo; what a mess,” said Justine Khanzadian, a 23-year-old graduate student hoping for a flight out of Egypt.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has appealed to Hosni Mubarak’s administration for lasting democracy. Before the press, Clinton stated the U.S. rejects the Egyptian dictatorship.

“(We don’t) want a democracy for six months or a year that evolves into a military dictatorship or a so-called democracy that then leads to what we saw in Iran,” said Clinton.
