Origin Of The Bagua

Bagua is the word given to the eight trigrams that are utilized in Taoist cosmology. Altogether, they represent the generic fundamental laws of reality. In no specific order they are the sky, marsh, fire, storms, wind, water, mountains, and the earth. Also called the diagrams, the items are related to astronomy, basic geography, and astrology too.

In its purest form, Cosmology is the study of the known universe and the humans inside of it. Cosmology itself was being practiced all around for an extremely long time but the word wasn’t coined until 1700.

A lot of historians cite yin and yang as the source of this philosophy. King Wen, founder of the Zhou Dynasty, offered a philosophical description when he said there were just earth and the heavens back when the world first began. These two mated and then the other six trigrams are their daughters and sons, respectively.

The eight elements are also necessary tools of the act of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is the act of decorating houses, offices, and burial sites to enact a better stream of fortune and spirituality. Their uses are usually put into two categories which are grave sites and homes. While beginning in Asian culture, most in the western society have also taken up this practice.

In modernized types of Feng Shui, specific maps were invented to help interested people arrange their furniture more productively. With the map, people could more clearly understand how certain areas in a room were correlated to certain aspect of their lives. They include things like money, inner knowledge, relationships, and health.

The Bagua maps were intended to be used as informative guides for existing rooms. Lay the maps over a floor plan or scaled drawing and it can help you find all of the spots lacking in good energy and chi. You can enhance and improve these areas, by identifying them first. Determining the best spot for fortune and wealth, for example, will ensure you have success in that area if you place your desk there.

Visually, the philosophy’s eight diagrams have become widely known and fairly popular. Both the South Vietnam and South Korean flags feature variants of the trigrams. Slightly altered versions of the ancient symbols have recently even found their way into mainstream television shows and movies. The popular American show Lost even used variations of them for their DHARMA Initiative logos and several well known anime cartoons have borrowed from them as well.
