The Mistaken Idea Of The Safety Of Nuclear Power Plants
The recent cataclysm in Japan caused by the 9.0 earthquake and the subsequent giant tsunami has brought concern once more about the safety of nuclear power plants. Currently, there is the apprehension that radioactivity caused by the damage of the power plants is fanning out and jeopardizes a wide span and possible cause of cancers or other radiation consequences to many people.
It is true that the fear of the effect is truly understandable, antagonists to the utilization of nuclear power plants for power source now use the same failure to once again swamp the people of angry campaigns against nuclear power plants.
The radiation threat is definitely there. However it is absurd to pose the cause to the Japan nuclear power plants nor their inherent safety be doubted.
To begin with, the most reasonable issue to ask might be, how many people died instantly because of the nuclear power plant following the tremor and tsunamis? Should we believe the reason that nuclear power plant safety is questionable, is it not likewise doubtful how we make our airports and cities? Remember that these deaths were done by the earthquake and tsunamis, just as the nuclear power plants, where complete safety precautions are done, including those hazard sign placements, were damaged by the same calamities, and the power plants did not cause damage by themselves. If we are to blame the peril to the power plants merely because elements of nature damaged them, can we not put on the same ridiculous logic and blame the cities for housing many people; therefore they died there due to giant tsunami and tremors?
If cities, airports, seaports, or other man made structures can be damaged by giant tsunamis and very powerful temblors, why not power plants? Maybe these people, using identical logic, will have the guts also to campaign for prohibition of cities or any other man-made structures that cannot defy a 9.0 earthquake.
Incidentally, the people have yet to hear a news of one death directly due to the nuclear power plants in Japan now and before. And still we are silent how the accident of a coal mine barely two weeks after the Japan incident demanded over 40 lives in Pakistan, reportedly because of unsafe conditions. Does this point that coal mining for fuel for electricity generation is less dangerous then compared to nuclear power because no one is demonstrating versus them despite the frequency of tragedies such as this, where safety danger signs may not even be installed?
Truly, it is to be recognized that no amount of safety signs could be trusted upon if the greatest elements of nature is the origin of the destruction. The disaster in Japan could be another case for study on situating nuclear power plants, but to attribute nuclear power plants as unsafe as it tried to withstand even a 9.0 tremor is totally unreasonable.
