How Do You Tell The Difference Between a Male and Female Chinese Water Dragon?
My Chinese Water Dragon is 12 inches long head to tail and I was wondering if it’s a male or female.
Sometimes it can be quite hard to tell until they are closer to two years of age. All of them appear female from the get go. I had one that I knew was female and the other I swore was a male because they had completely different features. My “male” was getting the big jowls and orangey under the arms and a bigger crest in comparison. Then, one day “he” started laying eggs….. I thought he was younger than my female but as it turns out they laid eggs one after the other and are pretty close in age. I found on tricia’s page that they start showing signs of being a male around 16 inches of length. If they hit 18 inches and still no male features, then it is more likely a female. My “male” was 21 or 22 inches the last time I measured her. Really all you can do is wait it out and keep a measuring tape laying around. I’m not sure if you have a preference ( I really hoped for one of each), but if you are hoping for a male and you end up with a female, females are great in my experience. Both of mine jump on my feet and climb to my shoulder. If I sit down in their walk in enclosure, they will jump in my lap. They have awesome personalities. The only down side to females is that they can become egg bound. Make sure you provide her with an egg laying box if it is a girl and have it ready as soon as you know or by the time she gets 18 inches. Better to be safe than sorry. Keep an eye out for loss of appetite and a large belly and you will know she is more likely ready to start laying. Sorry to get off topic but I wish I was better prepared at the time.
