Brothel tokens were like gift cards today, except they were to be redeemed at a whorehouse. They could be bought and given as gifts by men to other men or they could be bought for later use. In some cases, brothels would hand them out as advertising. Basically the offer was get one free, so that the local men would want to come back as paying customers later.
