British India

The great British Indian institution

The history of Indian food in the UK stretches back much further than the average customer can possibly predict. We can be forgiven for walking down almost any street in Britain and taking the sight of an Indian restaurant or takeaway for granted.

It seems amazing to think that Indian food has been associated with this country for four centuries? It is not just in this country that it has changed radically, but also in its native area.

Indian people first starting arriving in this country in the seventeenth century, after English merchant began trading in Surat. This new company called itself the East India Company, and offered employment to lascars or local sailors to work as crewmembers. During the eighteenth century the population of Lascars grew faster than at any other time, although ironically, they were among the poorest in society.

The British interest in Indian food began to grow as the country’s influence in India expanded. This saw the publication of the first recipes of Indian food, and the invention of curry powder around 1780.

In modern times there were three main reasons for the growth of the Indian restaurant in this country. The growth in personal affluence was the first reason. The second and third reasons were the cosmopolitan nature of the English and the introduction of the Tandoor respectively.

The Tandoor came from a Babylonian word ‘tinuru’ meaning fire, and originated in the Middle East. When it was introduced into this country in the late sixties, it gave the national culture the classic ‘chicken tandoori’. This has now become a timeless favourite in all Indian takeaways throughout the land.

The food sector has been dominated by the rise in popularity of Indian food, much of this rise has been attributed to several successful entrepreneurs. The popularity of both Indian restaurants and take away food has ensured that it will be an English institution for many years to come!
