The History of Flyer Design
Flyers are very common hand outs in public places. These are used to advertise a company, a product or a service. If the concept is really good, flyers are kept for future reference. If not, they get thrown easily in the nearest trash bin. To avoid the “trash” fate, companies really put a lot of time and effort in to its creation and marketing – design, flyer template, message and distribution.
It was in the sixties when a colorful and popular method of mass advertising was designed by promoters who could not afford the poster printing. They had to work on a low budget that prompted them to come up with an alternative for posters. This paved the way for the birth of the flyers.
Posters (which started in the 16th century) were very expensive. They were appreciated as pieces of fine art. They were primarily used to astound and secondarily to advertise. Examples of the oldest posters were Moulin Rouge and the first Art Noveau.
The flyers came as an option, and they became progressively popular in Britain when psychedelic imagery was applied into the design to promote famous bands such as The Doors, The Rolling Stone and Pink Floyd. Then came the photocopied and anarchic punk flyers (theme) used by The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks. America had The Ramones and The New York Dolls’ version of hardcore punk scene designed on promotional flyers.
The flyer designs in the sixties were monotonous using ripped pages and images of DM boots and Mohican haired punks. And these were distributed amongst punk population.
Then the electronic dance music came in and stole the spotlight. The new design for this era led to the flyer design of today. The visuals were in the form of surreal imagery and hedonism with a lot of colors. From fractal shapes to 3D vectors, everything was mixed with dancing figures and staring eyes to sell Amnesia, Rezurrection and Fantazia. An element of spirituality was the fad in flyer design during those days.
So it was the music culture that dominated the history of flyer design. They were utilized to promote rock bands in America and Britain.
At present, flyers are very popular and accessible to any small or big businesses. The designs have become very creative and colorful. Customized designs are getting widely accepted. They are even enhanced by various flyer templates. Some flyers are still designed using traditional and modern art and are featured in galleries and exhibits across the world. But for the most part, flyers are used to advertise and promote something – company, product, service or an event.
