The Cat Goddess On All Inclusive Holidays In Egypt
When enjoying all inclusive holidays in Egypt, you’ll notice a strong presence of the cat goddess, even though the Cult of Bast (cat worship) was banned in 390AD. If you take a look into Egypt’s ancient history, you’ll see why Egyptians worshipped felines. Some 4000-6000 years ago, Egyptian farmers were experiencing problems with rodents, which broke into their stores and ate their grain. The African wildcat, an ancestor of today’s house cat, was a first class mouser and was encouraged by the farmers to hunt its prey. The Egyptians were so grateful that their thanks evolved into worship, which began 4950 years ago.
By 975BC, cats were considered as Gods, known as ‘Bast’ or ‘Bastet’. Bast was a Goddess known for her nurturing nature and was considered as a positive force for propsperity. Her twin sister, Sekhmet, depicted as a woman with a lioness head, was the opposite. She represented the darker side of the Goddess, the destructive power of nature and of mankind. Cats were seen as Gods in animal form. By appeasing the cats, you were appeasing the Gods.
Consequently, cat worshipping flourished for over 1,000 years, constructing temples of worship, which people on all inclusive holidays in Egypt can visit. The feast day of Bast was enjoyed by 700,000 ancient Egyptians on October 31st every year, who descended upon the temple to dance and eat in celebration of the Goddess. Inside the temple, cats were treated to tasty food and carried around in baskets. If you harmed a cat, you were put to death. Funerals for cats were spectacular – the owners would shave their eyebrows off in respect.
Cat lovers who are enjoying holidays in Egypt can visit a recent discovery in Alexandria – a temple dedicated to the cat Goddess, Bast. Built by Queen Berenike ll two thousand years ago, it contained over 600 bronze statues of cats.
