In order to write effectively, many English professors are critical of students’ papers so that students will rise to the level expected.  Professors like students to submit papers that are high in analysis and low on cosmetic mistakes.  Examples of how students can work on being more analytical and eliminating mistakes would be for students to learn about the different laws of grammar and how to properly apply them.  Another idea for students is to work on gaining a more expansive vocabulary.  High complexity diction is appreciated by English professors.

There are many different courses that are in the English degree program course catalog.  Many students find themselves interested in a time period or in a specific author or style of writing. While English programs may require students to dabble in all of the areas of study, there are four specific categories that encompass most degree programs in this field.  These areas are Poetry, William Shakespeare, British literature and American literature. It would be smart to learn more about English composition course.

Poetry is the oldest form of writing and in order for something to be poetic it must contain two distinct elements:  Poems must be written in verse form and they must contain figurative language.  There are many different poetry courses in college, but perhaps some of the most famous poetry types are epic poetry, romantic poetry, and realist poetry.

William Shakespeare is responsible for an amazing volume of contributions to the English language.  Shakespeare was the foremost playwright of his time and could still claim that title today.  He is also responsible for creating an original type of sonnet.  Some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays are “Romeo and Juliet”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “As You Like It”, “Cymbeline” and “The Taming of the Shrew”.

British literature is the oldest form of literature in the English language.  This form of literature pre-dates the Norman invasion of 1066 – we can tell this by the age of such tomes as “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”.  There are many different authors who are studied in British literature courses, some of them are Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Donne, John Milton, Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens. American literature is similar to British literature in that it chronicles the time in which Europeans have settled in the New World.  In order to appreciate American literature, one must appreciate the diversity of people and time periods.   Some important American authors are Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
